Which fence height to choose ?

You have a fencing project and one of the first questions you will ask yourself is : which height to choose. First of all it will depend on the legal limit that your geographical location depends on. Then, after checking your rights, 2 majors criteria allow you to define the height that will best match your requirements.

  • Type of residence

Depending on your type of residence, you may be subject to legal constraints restricting your choice in the type of fence or the desired height. It is therefore recommended before any external project, to consult the planning department of your town hall. Once the decision for your project is made, a pre-declaration of works to be carried out, will be requested.

  • Define your requirements

    • Your choice of the desired height for your fence can be guided by 3 criteria :

    Define your boundaries :
You just want to define the boundaries of your land, but you don’t necessarily know which height to choose. Several elements come into play :

    • The height of the people in your household
    • Outward facing position
    • The desired look
    • The necessary security

To work this out, browse around your garden, look at areas requiring more privacy : terrace, swimming pool for example.  Measure with the aid of a tape measure, the height that you require.  Note that on average, the fence height chosen for a garden is about 1m70.

  • For security

The height of your fence secures your property by limiting the risk of intrusion. To do this, you need to define a sufficient height that allows you to feel safe without creating a feeling of confinement and thus impacting the look of your property.  Height is a deterrent to people who do not mean well. However, no residential fence can reduce the risk of intrusion to zero.

  • Preserve your privacy

Depending on your environment, your requirements for fencing will be different. Indeed, when a garden is exposed to the eyes of the neighbours, overlooks a street or a busy area, we more easily tend to favour a rather substantial height.  The garden is a living space in its own right where one prefers to protect oneself from prying eyes. You can then choose to add privacy slats to your fence to protect yourself from glances. When the view is clear, we opt instead for a lower fence to keep the feeling of space provided by your land.
